My Prayer

The Oils and Natural Additives used.

About the Oils :  I have gleaned  this information about the oils and nutrients from several sources.  This is not a comprehensive list of all oils used in body care products, but the ones I have chosen to use so far.  Based on the information I have attained, I have tried to use them accordingly to benefit myself and others.  I can lay no claims to the benefits they may provide in using my products, as they have not been tested and evaluated scientifically.  Bottom line:  These oils and nutrients contain wonderful natural elements for our skin and bodies—much better for me and you than synthetic products.

About Essential fatty Acids:  Fatty acids found in vegetable oils inhibit bacterial growth and encourage the production of antibodies, enabling our systems to defend against infection and inflammation.  Fatty acids combine with protein and cholesterol to build membranes that link one cell to another.  Water loss, resulting in eczema, hair loss, and dry skin, is thought to be related in part to low essential fatty acids.  Vegetable oils high in essential fatty acids ease inflammation and itching, moisturize the skin and scalp, and treat scaly skin and dandruff.

They are listed in alphabetical order for your convenience

Almond, Sweet  - This oil is highly moisturizing, fine textured and easily absorbed. It is high in oleic acid. It is used often as a carrier oil for massage and aromatherapy, leaving skin soft, smooth and non-greasy.  Almond oil is rich in oleic and linoleic essential fatty acids.  It is known to help balance the skins moisture level and repair the skin’s lipid matrix barrier.  It helps promote a clear, clean, young looking complexion.  Used in soap making, it produces a mild conditioning bar with stable thick lather.

Beeswax and Soy wax—used in soaps to provide hardness and adds stability to creams, lip balms, and lotions.

Castor oil—The rich percentage of ricinoleic acid and high viscosity of this oil sets it apart from all of the other vegetable oils.  It acts as a humectant by attracting and retaining moisture to the skin—much like olive and jojoba oil—providing emolliency and softer skin.  It is often used in shampoo bars for conditioning dry or brittle damaged hair or treatment of psoriasis and hair loss.  It provides a thick, stable lather.

Cocoa Butter-This is a rich moisturizer used to help harden bar soap or lotion/massage bars.  It is a hard saturated fat and lays down a protective layer that holds moisture to the skin.  It is not as readily absorbed as unsaturated oils.

Coconut OilIs a gift to soap making!  Provides moisturizing properties, cleansing ability and fluffy lather.  Without this saturated fat in your soap formula, it would definitely be lacking.  One source says to beware of labels saying “derived from Coconut oil” this is a synthetic foam booster “sodium lauryl sulfate” that has been linked to skin allergies.   Too much coconut oil (after being soponified) can be drying to the skin.

Coconut Oilfractionated—Coconut oil that has been hydrolyzed separating the fatty acid from the glycerol.  The capric caprylic acids are then removed from the fatty acids and added back to the glycerol to create an extremely  light cosmetic grade oil used in making emollient lotions or creams.

Evening Primrose Oil—This oil is high in linoleic acid and contains one of the few plant sources of gamma-linoleic acid (7 to 10 % GLA) which is very therapeutic both internally and in skin care products.  The human body does not produce this essential fatty acid (also known as Vit. F).  We need to include these essential fatty acids in caring for our bodies.  Evening Primrose Oil is readily absorbed by the skin providing excellent transport of these fatty acids.  It is an oil that is suited best to dry skin, is a mild astringent, and an excellent treatment for dry, flaky skin prone to eczema and psoriasis.  Used as a super fatting ingredient.

Rosehip Seed Oilsimilar in properties to Evening Primrose Oil being very rich in essential fatty acids.  Derived from the small oval fruit inside the rose bud.  This oil is high in linoleic and linolenic fatty acids.  It has present in it: Trans-Retinoic acid, a derivative of Retinol (Vit A.) and is marked as Tretinoin.  It is high in gamma-linoleic acid (GLA—Vit. F).  It has recently been used to help reduce signs of aging, fine wrinkles around eyes and mouth, scarring, burns, sun damage, and stretch marks.  It may aggravate acne.

JojobaThis is really not an oil, but a liquid wax.  It’s structure closely resembles that of our own skin’s sebum -making it very compatible   It contains myristic acid known to aid in anti-inflammatory action.  It is an excellent moisturizer for all skin types and is readily absorbs into the skin.  It has healing power and can benefit dry, mature aging skin, wrinkles, acne and pimples.

Kukui Nut Oil—The kukui nut tree is Hawaii’s official state tree and they have used this oil for hundreds of years to treat sunburned and chapped skin.  It is also known to benefit acne, eczema, and psoriasis.   It is well liked as a facial oil because it is  non-greasy and  light.  It is a transparent. low-viscosity oil that quickly absorbs into the deepest layers of the skin.  It contains high levels of essential fatty acids, Vit. A, C, and E, -all antioxidants that create and protect healthy skin tissue.  This is an oil of luxury!

Macadamian Nut Oil— This oil is also an oil of luxury!  Like Kukui Nut oil they are both highly un-saturated vegetable oils—native to Hawaii.   Macadamian Nut oil is the only oil rich in palmitoleic acid which is normally found in our own skin’s sebum.  Palmitoleic acid has been suggested to act as an antioxidant protecting cells from deteriorization.  It contains  around 80% monounsaturated fatty acids.  It is very emollient and is beneficial to aged, dry skin where sebum production has reduced.  It is easily absorbed, softens skin and is said to reduce fine lines.  Macadamian Nut oil is thick and is used with other carrier oils in small amounts so as not to overpower a blend.

Olive Oil-  Olive oil is an excellent moisturizer with healing properties, rich in oleic fatty acids.  It attracts moisture and holds it close to the skin.  Like other oils (jojoba, shea, kukui nut, macadamian nut...) that contain properties close to our own sebum, it is said not to block the functions of the skin, allowing  it to continue to sweat, release sebum, and shed dead skin cells.  It produces a mild soft bar of soap, excellent for sensitive skin and babies.  Soaps with 100% olive oil are known as Castille soap.  Other oils are sometimes added to provide hardness and lather to the bar.

Rice-Bran OilI list this oil here as it is easily used in place of olive oil.  It is rich in Vit E—antioxidant, and       linoleic and oleic essential fatty acids.  It is very similar to Wheat Germ oil, but not as “heavy”.  It’s molecule is smaller and better able to penetrate the skin.  It goes on smooth without leaving a greasy or sticky feel.  Rice Bran oil is very gentle and suitable for baby products, lotion and massage oils, facial and body moisturizers, and eye creams.

Palm OilThis oil adds hardness and conditioning to bar soap with smooth creamy bubbles.  It is the vegetable equivalent of tallow in soap making.  Used in environmentally friendly detergents as it is biodegradable.  Palm oil is generally non-toxic and non-sensitizing. This oil is easily soponified, cleans well, and is mild.

Shea Butter—This butter is rich in oleic fatty acids.  Great for lotions and massage.  For soap making, it has a large amount (up to 11%) of “unsoponifiables”, thus the fats and oils remain in their original state and are able to moisturize. condition  and nourish the skin.

Wheat Germ OilThis oil is very high in Vit. E and essential fatty acids being rich in linoleic acid.  Vit E. is a natural antioxidant and preservative that lengthens its own and other oils’ shelf life and adds richness when used in combination with them.  It is purported to promote smoother, younger looking skin, heal scar tissue and stretch marks, promotes the formation of new cells, improves circulation, and to help repair sun damage to skin.  It is said to help relieve symptoms of dermatitis and to stimulate tissue regeneration.

Additives:

Pure Essential Oils– Aromatic oils derived from natural plant sources.   Each has a unique benefit and quality.  Fragrance oils are made synthetically.

Fresh Goat Milk packed full of essential fatty acids and nutrients.  Great for you to drink and use in soap!

Rose Hip PowderRose Hips are believed to have high levels of linoleic and linolenic fatty acids.  These acids are said to heal skin and regenerate, possibly helping with burns, scars, stretchmarks.  Rose Hip powder adds a mild exfoliating factor and color to the bar.

Rosemary Powdera member of the mint family.  High in antioxidants helping to fight free radical damage, which may combat visible signs of aging.  It acts as a natural astringent.   Also adds color to the bar.

Vit E.—an antioxidant added for it’s value and to inhibit oils from turning brown and going rancid
